Here's something that confuses almost every new Mihon user: you install the app, open it, and... there are no manga sources. Where do you actually read from? The answer is extensions — and understanding them is the difference between a great setup and a frustrating one.

How Mihon's extension model works

Mihon itself is just a reader. Sources — the websites and catalogs you browse — come as extensions, which are small add-on packages you install separately. The app and the sources stay independent of each other, which means a source can update or fix something without you waiting for a whole new app release.

Extensions live in repositories ("repos"), which are just lists of available extensions the app can browse. Add a repo, and Mihon shows you every extension in it, ready to install with a tap.

The trusted repo: Keiyoushi

The extension repository most of the community trusts is Keiyoushi. It's run by the same circle of developers behind Mihon, it's open, and its extensions are the ones that get maintained. If someone tells you "just add the Keiyoushi repo," that's solid advice.

To add it: open Mihon, go to Browse → Extensions, and add the repository. The app will then list available extensions; install the ones for the sources you actually read. You don't need fifty — install a few, try them, and remove the ones you don't use. Fewer extensions means fewer updates to manage and a cleaner browse tab.

Why "trusted" matters more than "more"

Because extensions run code on your device, installing one from a random repo is a real security decision. A malicious or sloppy extension can do things you wouldn't want. So the rule is simple:

  • Stick to well-known repos like Keiyoushi. They have maintainers, review, and a community watching.
  • Don't install extensions from links in comments, videos, or DMs. If someone is pushing a specific repo hard with promises of "exclusive" sources, be skeptical.
  • Keep extensions updated. Sources change their websites; extensions update to match. An extension that suddenly breaks usually just needs an update, not a replacement from somewhere shady.

This is the same principle as the app itself: get Mihon only from the official download page, and get extensions only from repos the community actually trusts. The safe installation guide covers the app side of this in detail.

A practical setup routine

Here's what a clean first-time setup looks like:

  1. Install Mihon from the official page.
  2. Add the Keiyoushi repository in Browse → Extensions.
  3. Install extensions for the 2–4 sources you read most. Start small.
  4. Open a source, find a series, add it to your library.
  5. Set up your library categories — the library management guide has a system that works well.
  6. Connect tracking (MyAnimeList/AniList) so your progress syncs automatically.

Troubleshooting the common headaches

"No results" or empty catalogs. Usually a stale extension. Check for extension updates first, then check whether the source's website itself changed — big site redesigns break scrapers until the extension catches up.

Chapters won't load. Try refreshing the chapter list, then check for an extension update. If one source breaks but others work, the problem is the source, not your app.

Too many duplicate sources. This happens when people install every extension that looks familiar. Audit your extensions every few months and remove the ones you never open.

Extensions are the engine of the whole setup, but they're also the part people overthink. Pick the trusted repo, install what you need, keep things updated — that's genuinely all there is to it. Once your sources are in place, the fun part starts: organizing everything, which is where the library and tracking guide comes in.
